Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary :India February 15, 2006
The Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is world famous for its largest population of Nilgiri Tahr which are about 1317 in number, according to the 1991 census. Tiger, panther and wild dogs are can be spotted in both the open grass land sholas forests. Civet cat, jungle cat, Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur and wild boar also inhabit in sholas and their fringes. The Atlas moth, the largest of its kind in the world, can also be spotted in this park.
The main inhabitant of the Eravikulam park is Nilgiri Tahr. Now the park has the largest known population of Tahrs existing in the world.The park also shelters Atlas Moth, Elephants, Sambhars, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Tigers and Leopards.
Spread over 97 sq. kms of untouched natural splendour, Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a sanctuary set up for the preservation of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
Eravikulam is situated in the south Indian state of Kerala in the higher altitudes of the Western Ghats. The park extends from the latitude 9°40′ in the North to the longitude 77°20″ in the East. A part of the Idukki district, Eravikulam is very near to the scenic hill station of Munnar. Many tourists visit Kerala for its natural and wildlife bounty.
Eravikulam’s formidable range of attractions includes the spectacular mass flowering of the kurunj shrub. The herds of tahr are very comfortable on steep slopes. In order to view sonic of its other wildlife, it is necessary to venture deep into the park. The trek to the foot of Anaimudi Hill will reveal Asian Elephant, Gaur, Lion-tailed Macaque, Leopard, giant squirrels and, perhaps, a tiger. The nearly 100 species of birds include the Rufous-bellied Eagle and the Black-and-orange Flycatcher, which can be found only in restricted areas of south-west India. Day visits are possible to Eravikulam for its awe-inspiring scenery and 600strong tahr population. These nimble-footed creatures are a major attraction and they can almost invariably be sighted at close quarters near Rajamalai, the main entrance situated in the tourism zone of the park.
