Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary :India February 15, 2006

Jim Corbett National Park India has always been famous for their resident tigers. Initially Jim Corbett National Park reserve was named as ‘Hailey National Park’ in 1936. Jim Corbett National Park was renamed in 1954-55 as ‘Ramganga National Park’ and again in 1955-56 as ‘Jim Corbett National Park’ after Jim Corbett who hunted down tigers that had turned man-eaters, between 1907 to 1939. Jim Corbett National Park India is the 1st and oldest National Park of India. Jim Corbett National Park India was one of the nine Tiger Reserves created at the launch of the Project Tiger in 1973.

Besides the tiger, Corbett is a haven for 50 mammals, 580 kinds of birds and 25 reptile species. The Park has elephants, the Himalayan black bear in the higher elevations, sloth bear, varieties of lesser cats, dhole -the wild dog and an entire spectrum of colourful birds including water birds, pheasants, jungle fowl and the Indian hornbill.

This area includes the whole of Kalagarh Forest Division (including 301.18 sq. km. area Sananadi Wildlife Sanctuary),96.70 sq. km. of Ramnager Forest Division and another 89 sq. km.

The Corbett National Park is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas and is spread over the districts of Nainital and Garhwal in the State of Uttaranchal, located in northern India. The national park covers an area of 521 sq kms, with an area of 312.86 sq kms falling in Garhwal district, and the balance 208.14 sq kms in Nainital district. It was established on August 8th, 1936 and is the oldest national park of the Indian subcontinent. Corbett National Park plays an important role in the conservation of Indian Wildlife.

Nainital is the most popular tourist place close to Corbett National Park that you can visit. Nainital is one of the most popular hill stations in north India and many tourists visit Nainital during summer. One can also explore Ramnagar and head to Ramnagar barrage. The other places of interest are Garjia Temple, Bhimtal and Naukuchiyatal.

In the vicinity of the Jim Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary are the wildlife sanctuaries like Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary and Dudhwa Wildlife Sanctuary. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and one of the major tourist destinations in the country.
