Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary :India February 10, 2006

Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful forest reserve located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. This national park occupies a special place in India’s efforts towards natural conservation. It was created in the 1930s from the local Maharaja Voodiyar. s hunting lands, and named Venugopal Wildlife Sanctuary. Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary was expanded later in 1941 to adjoin the Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary, which lay towards its northern edge, and Wynad and Madumulai Sanctuaries, which lay towards its southern edge in the states of Kerala and Tamilnadu, respectively. The entire area now constitutes the vast Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of India’s most extensive tracts of protected forest. It has been a designated tiger reserve in 1973.

The Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary was one of the wildlife sanctuaries that were chosen in the year 1973 for the launch of the Project Tiger by the Government of India.There are more that 1,000 elephants at the Bandipur national Park in Karnataka, India and you are bound to see elephant herds on the move. Gaze with pure amazement at the way elephants playfully sprinkle water on each other near the water holes and feel pure pleasure as you see elephant cubs trying to run.

Bandipur wildlife sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1973 and it was one of the 15 tiger reserves in the country. The park is an extension of the Venugopal Wildlife Park, which was established by the Maharajas of Mysore in 1931.

There are a number of tourist destinations around Bandipur National Park that one can visit. Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is just 19 kilometres from the park. One can also visit Mysore, which is 80 kilometres away. The tourist places to tour include Gopalaswamy Hills, which is about 20 kilometres from Bandipur and Ooty, which is 79 kilometres away.
