Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary :India February 10, 2006

Located in the midst of the deciduous forests, 21 km from the city of Alwar in the state of Rajasthan is the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Also a part of Project Tiger, it was declared a tiger reserve in 1979. Besides its tiger population, the reserve is known for its population of leopards, porcupines, panthers, hyenas, civets, chinkara (Indian Gazelle), Langur monkeys and the four horned antelope. The sanctuary also has a remarkable bird population ranging from Quail, Pea Fowl, Eagles, White Breasted Kingfisher, and the Great Indian Horned Owl. Safari trips are organized by the Forest Reception Office located on Jaipur Road. Wildlife enthusiasts can also book what is known as a ‘hide’ or a vantage point, which usually overlooks a waterhole, as this is a sure shot way of getting a close look at your favorite beasts when they come to quench their thirst.

The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in history as well. The ruins of medieval Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva is found within the park. The ruins of the 10th century AD temple Garh-Rajor are scattered all over the forest. You can have a panoramic view of the birds of Sariska in flight from the 17th century AD castle set on a sharp hilltop at Kanakwari. A palace built by the erstwhile Maharajas of Alwar has now been converted into a hotel.

The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan is situated only 200 km from Delhi and 107 km from Jaipur. Although larger than Ranthambore, it is less commercialised and has less tigers but a very similar topography. The diverse wildlife here is a wonderful example of ecological adoption and tolerance, for the climate here is flexible as well as erratic. The reserve was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958 and came under the “Project Tiger” as a tiger reserve in 1979.

Sariska wildlife sanctuary is situated off the Delhi-Alwar-Jaipur Road. Jaipur is located at a distance of 107-kms and Delhi at 200-kms from Sariska. Sariska is well connected with Alwar, which is further directly connected with bus services from Delhi and Jaipur.
